Pre-Mondial Re-Alignments: from Perestroika through The Arts Assembly to The School of the Displaced

Introducing Perpetuum Mobile and its major thematic projects, Ivor Stodolsky and Marita Muukkonen will show excerpts from PM’s latest film and discuss the historical and theoretical origins of their curatorial practice. The presentation will feature art by Re-Aligned artists such as Nikolay Oleynikov, Nuria Guell, Petr Pavlensky and Ramy Essam “the voice of Tahrir Square”. The discussion will lead to an investigation of the potentials of “pre-mondial re-alignments” and solidarity networks such as PM’s ongoing Safe Haven for art practitioners at risk residency programme.

Ivor Stodolsky (curator, theorist and writer, Berlin-Helsinki) is Co-Founding Director of Perpetuum Mobile (www.perpetualmobile.org). Recent thematic projects include the Perpetual Pavilion (Venice Biennale 2009, Berlin 2013, etc), The Re-Aligned Project (Berlin, Cairo, Moscow Biennial, Tromso, Checkpoint Helsinki, etc), The Arts Assembly (Manifesta 8, 2010), The School of the Displaced (Kiev Biennial 2015, Helsinki) and Pluriculturalism (Moderna Museet, Malmö). A theorist with a background in philosophy, social theory and anthropological research in the Russian field (e.g. “A Multi-Lectic Anatomy of Stiob and Poshlost’”), he is also an editor of publications (e.g. “The Raw, The Cooked and The Packaged”, “The Square” newspaper) and films.

Marita Muukkonen (curator, Helsinki-Berlin) is Co-Founding Director of Perpetuum Mobile (www.perpetualmobile.org). She has been Chairperson, Curator and Editor at HIAP, FRAME, FRAMEWORK; and held key functions at NIFCA. Marita has curated exhibitions and projects at museums such as in MoMA, Moderna Museet and Kiasma. Productions at biennials include the Perpetual Pavilion (Venice 2009), The Finnish Pavilion (2009), The Nordic Pavilion (2009), The Arts Assembly (Manifesta 8, 2010), the Nordic Pavillion at Dak’art Biennale (2012), and the School of Displaced Persons (Kiev Biennial, 2015). As co-director of Perpetuum Mobile, she has co-founded long-term thematic projects like Safe Haven, the Re-Aligned Project and Pluriculturalism. Marita contributes to a variety of publications.
